You have probably heard of Hyaluronic Acid, as it is now used in most skincare products, especially in anti-ageing products – but, what exactly is Hyaluronic Acid and why is it so good to address skin ageing?

The Science of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a molecule that is naturally produced by our body; it is found in our skin, eyes, joints and connective tissues and its function is to protect and hydrate them. Together with collagen and elastin, it forms the building blocks of our skin.
Thanks to its binding properties, this molecule can retain up to a thousand times its weight in water, which provides continuous moisture to our skin and body and prevents water to evaporate from it. This is why HA is the real deal when it comes to keeping our skin looking young and supple!
Much like collagen and elastin, Hyaluronic Acid also decreases with age, from age 30 onwards in fact, which is why we usually begin seeing changes in how our skin looks around this time. This is due to a number of factors, including oxidative stress, UV rays and pollutants, which can affect the skin’s ability to preserve good levels of hydration, hence those pesky fine lines and wrinkles starting to appear!
Ageing is a natural process, and even though it’s important to embrace it, no one really likes seeing their youth fading overtime when they look in the mirror.
There are some methods to prevent and slow down the ageing process of our skin, such as eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, wearing a good quality sunscreen (every day!) and of course, drinking plenty of water. One can also adopt a good skincare regimen that includes topical HA serums, face masks and creams to hydrate the skin and giving it a more dewy, youthful appearance, but this will only slow things down, there’s no pause button.

Hyaluronic Acid Filler Explained

Topical products can be of great help in combating age-related imperfections, however, they only work superficially; to give the skin a plumped up, supple firmness again, HA fillers can be a great option, as they offer longer-lasting results (up to a year) as the HA is embedded much deeper within the skin than any topical product can reach.
When injected, HA penetrates deeper into the tissue to plump and restore youthful contours. Unlike the serums and creams available off the shelf, injectable Hyaluronic Acid differs because it’s a cross-linked HA which gives it more of a gel-like consistency; due to its thickness the HA will stay in place, improving depressed areas of the skin and giving the face a more youthful contoured look and feel, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What to expect during an HA filler treatment

HA filler treatment is performed by a medical professional using a very fine needle or cannula to implant the hyaluronic acid int the desired area. Firstly, a consultation consent process to explain what the treatment feels like and what should happen before and after the treatment. There will be some physical sensation, however, the pain should be very manageable. The entire treatment usually takes 15 to 20 minutes in total, and the results are immediately visible.
Hyaluronic Acid has been used within the aesthetic industry for many years, and complications with this kind of treatment can happen, some can be easily treated and others may be more complicated to rectify.
